You are invited to take part in an alternative tour of York's little known Cold War Bunker. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac in Holgate, where you'll be welcomed into this atmospheric 60's time-capsule to take a solo tour through a series of 360 degree films viewed through an immersive VR headset at different points in the bunker.

Developed by artists Lucy Barker and Yvonne Carmichael following a series of conversations and workshops with older people in the local area, the Royal Observer Corps veterans and the knowledgeable bunker staff.  The project explores the bunker and its memories; the real and not so real, taking you on a different journey.

Yvonne and Lucy are interested in the crossover between contemporary art, heritage and experimenting with new technologies. Lucy and Yvonne co-produced  the two year programme in York called Vespertine - a series of early evening events in York city centre following the cities designation of Unesco City of Media Arts.  Vespertine developed partnerships between heritage and visitor attractions, the city's artists and arts organisations and has allowed new audiences to participate in cutting-edge cultural experiences. Check out the snazzy online exhibition of the first 18 events at www.vespertinevault.com (Best viewed on a laptop or iPad)

Big thanks to:

To artist, musician and writer Andy Abbott for assisting with the 360 video filming and editing.  Rachel Bowers, Royal Observer Veterans Jim, Tim, Ann, Gordon and to David and Dave at Carlisle 51 Post in Threlkeld for helping with this project and featuring in the videos and to residents of Chancery Court, Armana House, Barstow House and Gale Farm Court for their valuable insights and contributions.

Presented by Vespertine and York Archaeological Trust in partnership with English Heritage.

This Vespertine project is funded by local ward funding for Holgate, The Whitwam Family Foundation, Taylor’s Good Causes Fund, English Heritage, is supported by York Archaeological Trust and has been devised by creative co-producers Lucy Barker and Yvonne Carmichael.
