Micklegate Walk (formerly Tower Two Trail)

An introduction to the archaeology and history of Micklegate and Bishophill (formerly Tower Two Trail)

Unfortunately, the archaeological investigations and associated scaffolding works to allow access to this part of the wall including Tower 2 and that were commissioned by the City of York Council have been delayed to a later date, hopefully now taking place in early November. As such we have to postpone all bookings for the Tower Two Trail at this time. Customers who have booked tickets for this trail have been contacted by email.

Instead, we are offering a walking tour of key historic sites on Micklegate and Bishophill, focusing on the archaeological work undertaken in this area by York Archaeological Trust. This walk, at £5.00 per limited ticket, will be at the same times as previously planned for Tower Two, but the content will be different. The walk will now commence at Micklegate Bar and involve discussions about our most recent excavations at Minster Self Drive, which revealed some of the remains of the Roman city of York, including a possible 2nd-century hypocaust system.

Artefacts from these excavations will be on display for the very first time at Micklegate Bar for this limited period only. Access to the Bar, an exclusive guided tour of the Bar and a guidebook will be included in the £5.00 fee; the tour content will also include the archaeology and history of the churches of Holy Trinity, St Martin cum Gregory and St Mary Bishophill Junior.

Revised dates for the Tower 2 Trail will appear here shortly.
