'You will suffer these and many other things in my name': Illness, Wounding and Suffering during the Crusades of the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries.

The Crusades were a series of religiously-inspired military expeditions which began with Pope Urban II's call for the First Crusade in 1095. These epic journeys were undertaken by people from all levels of society, from trained combatants, to untested fighters, to non-combatant camp followers, all attracted by Urban's promise that those who reached the holy city of Jerusalem, or died in the attempt, would have all of their sins forgiven. Many of those who took part in the crusades experienced some form of suffering: starvation, fatigue, illness, wounding, or death. This evening talk by Dr Joanna Phillips is part of our Church Explorers programme for 2017, and will investigate how such bodily suffering was seen as a form of religious devotion, and a necessary part of crusading.

Pre-booking essential: 01904 615505. This Event will be held at Barley Hall.
