The 2025 Richard Hall Symposium: A Day Out with the Vikings
The Richard Hall Symposium is returning to its original Festival of Ideas slot in 2025, with 'A Day Out with the Vikings', which will look at the past, present and future of festivals and public events on a Viking theme. A panel of invited speakers will join the discussion, which will look at re-enactment, reconstructed Viking ships, Viking festivals across the British Isles and Europe, and the JORVIK Viking Festival itself, which can be traced back to York city centre events staged for the first time in summer 1985. Speakers include:
- Lars Bill, Chairman of Oseberg Viking Heritage Foundation, Project Manager for Saga Lundenwic 2025
- Katherine Cross, Lecturer, School of Humanities, York St John University
- Allison Fox, Curator of Archaeology, Manx National Heritage
- Stefan Nyzell, Professor of History, Malmö University
- Chris Tuckley, Head of Interpretation & Learning, York Archaeology
Hot drinks on arrival and during a morning break. As the venue can become warm on sunny days, we recommend you take the weather into account when dressing for the day. Please check back on our events pages in the run-up to the event for updates to symposium information.
We will contact participants via email in the run-up to the event with a full schedule and any updates to speaker line-up. The event will be filmed and made available online for a limited time thereafter, so please notify the event organisers if you have any concerns about appearing in shot.
