York Archaeology Training Excavation - We Dig Derventio!

We Dig Derventio Training Excavation

A training excavation within Derby City Centre for students and members of the public interested in archaeology! We are excavating possible remains of a Roman settlement, or Vicus, associated with nearby Ryknield Street Roman Road and Derventio Roman Fort.

Over the course of a week with the staff of York Archaeology, trainees will learn the basics needed to work on a commercial archaeological excavation. The basics skills to be covered include:
• Basic excavation technique
• Use of tools
• Site photography
• Site drawing and recording
• Finds identification
• Finds processing
• GPS survey
Specialist sessions will also be hosted by staff from YA and Derby City Museums on metal detecting, drone survey, and archiving. City museum staff will also be providing behind-the-scenes tour, which includes a presentation of 3D printing and electronic microscope technologies depending on the week booked.

Trainees do not have to attend the full week-long course, but it cannot be guaranteed that all of the above will be covered.

Venue: Darley Playing Fields, Old Chester Road, Derby, DE1 3SA.

Excavation is not suitable for wheelchair users but site can be visited as it is accessed by a ramp onto the fields.
