Richard Hall Symposium

2026 marks 50 years since York Archaeology (then known as York Archaeological Trust) began excavations at 16–22 Coppergate. To celebrate this milestone, join us on Sunday 18th October at Tempest Anderson Hall for this year's Richard Hall Symposium.
Five years of continuous excavation between 1976 and 1981 uncovered a section of Viking Age York preserved in astonishing detail. The excavation became world famous, drawing visitors from around the world as York Archaeology revealed houses, workshops, backyards, and an unparalleled collection of artefacts and ecofacts.
The excavation and the research that followed have continued to spark questions and excite new generations of archaeologists. What has 50 years of investigation taught us? How are modern approaches revealing more about what we still want to discover about Viking Age York?
Hear from archaeologists and researchers who will share their work and insights into the ongoing research at Coppergate. Speakers include:
Ailsa Mainman
Andrew Woods
Lucy Moore
Gareth Perry
Chris Martin-Taylor
Jemima Cowey
Steve Allen
Luke Parker
Jane McComish
Graham Coates
Steve Ashby
Join us for a full day of presentations and discussion exploring 50 years of research and the questions that continue to shape our understanding of Viking Age York.
