Step back in time and experience the splendour of medieval dining at Barley Hall. As part of the York Food and Drink Festival, York Archaeology invites you to an unforgettable evening of feasting, entertainment, and historic atmosphere in the grand surroundings of the Great Chamber—once home to William Snawsell, Medieval Lord Mayor of York.

This unique event offers guests the rare chance to enjoy a lavish three-course medieval-inspired meal, complete with table wine and traditional entertainment between courses. Expect games, music, and merriment, all served in the glow of candlelight and authenticity that only Barley Hall can provide.

A bar will also be available on-site for the purchase of additional drinks, so this event is age 18+

Spaces are strictly limited and this event SOLD OUT quickly last year so early booking is highly recommended.

Join us for Rum Tales, a one night only collaboration between JORVIK Viking Centre and Villains Rum, blending Viking legend, immersive storytelling, and delicious drinks - all after dark.
Step into the world of Erik Bloodaxe and Queen Gunnhildr, two of the Viking Age’s most notorious figures and the inspiration behind Villains Rum’s boldest spirits. This special evening at JORVIK Viking Centre offers an exploration of myth, power, and legacy.
 

Your evening includes:
 A complimentary drink from Villains Rum on arrival
An after hours walking tour through the Viking-age Coppergate set
Saga storytelling session in the gallery, bringing tales of Erik and Gunnhildr to life


This event is part of the York Food and Drink Festival, it is an 18+ evening, perfect for those who enjoy a taste of history with a twist of rum.

Please arrive 10 minutes before your booking time, and have your ticket ready to be scanned.

Safety notes:

Visitors should also be aware that the floor of Viking-age Coppergate is quite uneven so we would recommend suitable footwear. A virtual tour is available for those who are unsteady on their feet or wheelchair users. This is displayed on a tablet, and is available on request.  Unfortunately, the set was designed to be toured in the suspended Time Capsules and is not wheelchair or pushchair friendly.
